Since 2006, the Horizon Foundation’s mission has been to develop a well-rounded and internationally-aware generation through exemplary education. The Foundation mainly focuses on refugees and students affected by conflict, occupation or exile.
Horizon scholars are exceptional young people from areas of conflict in the Middle East and Asia. The Foundation has worked in the past with a number of communities but now particularly focuses on Palestinians, Syrians, Tibetans and Afghans. The Foundation places its scholars in leading boarding schools for their final two years of secondary education.
By providing educational opportunities and support to young people, the Foundation seeks not only to offer new horizons for students but also to foster positive change in their communities.
The Horizon Foundation was set up in 2006 by Patrick and Kirkland Smulders and it was formally established and registered as an English charity in 2007. In September 2016, the Horizon Foundation became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with UK registered charity number: 1169379. The Foundation is a non-political and non-sectarian organisation.
