Rafi is an Afghan refugee who was awarded an Eton Orwell Scholarship supported by Horizon. He completed his A levels at Eton College in 2022 and believes this will give him opportunities to fulfil his academic potential and grow as a person. Whilst at Eton, he was secretary of the Middle East Society and gave a presentation about his homeland, Afghanistan. Rafi is currently studying for a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Kent.
Ghulam Ali is an Afghan refugee who was born and raised in Pakistan. Horizon supported him to attend UWC RCN from 2018-2020. Whilst at UWC RCN he was able to introduce Afghan culture to his peers. He organised a Navroz celebration, and Eid gatherings on campus, and taught Dari language through an Interculture Sharing and Learning project. Ghulam obtained a Computer Science degree from the University of Oklahoma in 2024 where he is currently pursuing an MSc in Management Information Systems.
Mujtaba completed his Horizon sponsored studies in 2015 and immediately began a BA in Economics at Bates College, USA which he completed in 2019. He returned to Afghanistan and began working as a consultant with the World Bank Group (WBG) in 2020. Mujtaba evaluates export legislation, policies and processes with a focus on agricultural commodities aiming to expand the export market for Afghan commodities and making the process more efficient for traders. He recently relocated to the World Bank office in Rwanda due to the current situation in Afghanistan.
Jamshid completed his Horizon sponsored studies in 2017 and graduated with a BA in Economics from Salve Regina University 2022. He was placed regularly on the Dean’s List and was also awarded the Dr and Mrs William Burrell Award for Excellence in Economics by his university department. Jamshid is now the manager of the Gordon Research Conference Centre at Bates College in the United States.

I want to use that education to become fully independent so that I can help myself, my family, my country and the world. I am looking forward to going back to my country to share what I have learned.”
